REQUIRED COURSES
The School of Business offers an "Option" in Advertising Management and a dual major in Marketing & Advertising. Students selecting the Advertising Management option must complete 24 hours of required course work described below. Elective courses provide the opportunity to further enhance knowledge and skills within Advertising Management.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ELECTIVES (total of 15 hours required)Mktg 445, 446, 447--National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) 8 hrs over three terms
This course is a year-long practicum and can be used to satisfy the requirement for Advertising Campaigns Mktg 443. Admission is by application only, with approval based on superior performance in Marketing 340 and other advertising courses. This course is offered during Summer Session only because of the number of agency visitations involved. While not a requirement for the Advertising Management option, it is highly recommended for any student who is serious about a career in advertising. (Prerequisite: Mktg 340)Mktg 410-- Digital Media Planning & Design 4 hrs
The course will cover the use of digital communications channels (Internet, mobile, etc.) to more effectively
reach key audiences. Topic areas include effective web content construction (information display, navigation
atmospherics, etc.), interactive media/advertising planning, use of digital media as a PR tool, and online
metrics to measure marketing/advertising effectiveness.
Mktg 341--Public Relations 3 hrs + 399 1 hour
This course is an excellent complement to the paid media focus of the various Advertising courses.(Prerequisite: Mktg 340)
Mktg 404--Advertising Internships 3 or 4 credit hours
The SBA Internship Office has a growing number of internships with agencies, media and clients.(Prerequisite: Mktg 340). Check out Internships under the COURSES section for detailed guidelines
on all these internships.
*Not all of the courses required for the Advertising Management option are offered year-around.
Therefore you should plan your course scheduling well in advance, especially if you plan to apply for NSA

While there is opportunity to take some courses concurrently, here is the best sequence for taking both required and recommended courses for an Advertising Option major.

The SBA provides academic advisors as well as career internship advisors to assist students in making the most of their collegiate experience. Academic advisors are trained to provide counsel in a wide range of issues. From selecting a business major to evaluating transferred transcripts, academic advisors are here to help students with all of their degree related questions. • Portland State rules and policieIn addition to academic advising, the SBA provides career and internship advisors to assist students in landing a job upon graduation or a summer internship while students are still in pursuit of their degree. Career and internship advisors can also provide resume and interview guidance.
All SBA advisors are available by appointment, which must be scheduled in advance. Drop-in hours are available as well. Drop-in hours are held regularly throughout the week and are designed to help answer routine or simple questions.
